Back in the 1990s I had several "Baxter" software sites. One featured kids software I coded, and the other was a site of links to software and other computer related software. This page features links to software that I currently use at least once a month. Most of it is free or inexpensive. Last updated in 2011.
Software for Mac, Windows and Sometimes Linux
- Sourceforge is an amazing website that features thousands of software projects, many of which are free. Whenever I have a problem to solve, I head to Sourceforge first for the solution.
- Audacity is a free sound/music editing program. Once you edit your sounds you'll also need the Lame for Audacity plugin to save the file as an MP3.
- Stellarium is a free planetarium for your computer.
- Inkscape is a free illustration program that lets you create vector based drawings.
- Firefox is still my favorite web browser after many years. Thousands of free add-ons let you do things you never imagined a browser could do.
- Handbrake is software you can use to turn DVDs into editable video files.
- XaoS is software used to create fractal images. Endless hours of fun.
- OpenOffice is free office productivity software that lets you create documents, make spreasheets and create presentations.
- Apache HTTP Server is a free web server that you can install on your personal computer.
Mac Software
- Pixelmator is an inexpensive, feature-rich image editing program.
- TextWrangler is a free text editing program that you can use to create and edit text files, including web page HTML files. I use it every day.
- Delicious Library 2 is the best software for organizing your music, DVD, blu ray, books and video game purchases.
- The Little App Factory is a software company that offers many cool programs like Grappler, that lets you save web videos.
- Rogue Amoeba is another cool software company with many useful audio-releated programs, some of them free.
- Celtx is a free script writing program.
- Cache Out X is a program that lets you clear the caches on your Mac, so it will perform better.
- Perian automatically updates video codes for your Mac. It's "the swiss army knife for Quicktime".
- Mac Update is a cool website where you can find thousands of programs for the Mac.
Windows Software
- DivX makes software for encoding and playing video content. The player is free.
- Notepad++ is a free and feature-rich text editor for Windows. Great for editing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML or simply taking notes. I use it every day.
- Xenu Link Sleuth is free link checker you can use to find broken links on a website.
- IrfanView is a free but very useful image viewer. I use it every day.
- Paint.Net is a free image editor for Windows.
- PeaZip is a free file extractor and compressor.
Linux Software
- Knoppix is a version of Linux that you boot off of a CD-Rom instead of a hard drive. Handy to have when your hard drive dies yet you want to use your computer.
- Free Software Directory is, like the name suggests, is a directory of free software.
