Sandy Hook is a popular Jersey shore destination. The beach fees are cheap, and it is relatively close the New York. It also features a nude beach (beach G) if you're into that. Sandy Hook is a mess of traffic, humans and the garbage they produce, during the summer. Sandy Hook is an interesting place to fish, hike and explore, during the fall, winter and spring, though. There are many decommissioned military batteries and bases, most of which are open to the general public.
Mortar Battery
A mortar battery designed to launch mortars at approaching ships.
The Potter Battery
This battery features massive guns and an intricate railed system to keep them loaded and firing.
Old Military Base
Part of the old military base on Sandy Hook
Explosive Storage
Concrete buildings once used to house explosives.
Gunnison Battery
Massive guns that you can climb all over and rotate (if you're strong enough to move them). They overlook the nude beach (consider yourself warned).
Rocket Fuel Barrel
Don't be too afraid to leave the trail. You might find something interesting like this old rocket fuel barrel. You might also come across a creep in the woods.
Hole to Nowhere
Another find found off the beaten path. A hole to nowhere (probably to an underground bunker).
Nike Missile
A Nike missile.
Cacti in New Jersey
There are cacti on Sandy Hook! Who new cacti grew in New Jersey?
Lewis Battery
This isn't on the Hook, but it is in Hartshorne Park, which overlooks the Hook.
Pillbox in the Woods
I discovered this while hiking off the trail. A neat discovery.
